One of the easiest thing to do is find a character bio. Everything has a wiki page or site of their own. This is the bio for Marceline from her wiki page on the Adventure Time wikia:

During Finn and Jake's first encounters with her, she requests that they leave wherever they are as the areas belong to her. There is more information then this but wiki pages help you find out things that you may have overlooked since wiki pages are made by hundreds of people and not just one.
